On Thursday, 13th June 2019, KPDA and Bowmans (Coulson Harney LLP) held a Learning and Development Symposium which took place at the ICEA Lion Centre, Westlands. The theme of the symposium was the ‘The Legal and Tax Structuring of a Real Estate Joint Venture’. The main speakers were:

  1. Alex Njage: Partner, Head of Real Estate and Construction, Coulson and Harney LLP
  2. Nikhil Hira: Director, Tax Department, Coulson Harney LLP

Alex Njage gave an introduction on what a joint venture is describing it as “a commercial alliance” or “collaborative arrangement” between two or more independent entities to combine resources in achieving a common business goal. He also delved into governance, deadlocks and dispute resolution related to Real Estate JVs.

As an expert in matters tax, Nikhil Hira’s speech revolved around the taxation of property. His speech mainly focused on the Legal and Tax Regime Governing Real Estate JVs. He concentrated on the relevant taxes affecting property in Kenya.

As KPDA and Coulson Harney LLP, we plan on holding a follow up session on real estate JVs which will focus on Packaging Projects for Financing, Exits by JV Board Directors and Lessons Learned from Failed JVs.

We would like to send our appreciation to Bowmans (Coulson Harney LLP) for fully sponsoring and hosting the event. We look forward to organizing future events together.
